Waste Management at Denmead Parish Council
DPC manages large areas of open space and maintains miles of hedgerow. These create green waste, the majority of which can be chipped/mulched and spread back onto the beds and borders.
From time to time, it also generates other waste itself, from old fencing to concrete rubble from foundations. It also ‘inherits’ waste from illegal dumping, such as old bike frames.
To manage this waste needs some area of storage, or a means of disposing of the waste as it is generated. The green waste can applied as mulch, but at times too much is generated to use at the time and will need to be stored. Woody waste can be stored as wood piles to provide a wildlife habitat.
The options are
1. Have a lockable skip for temporary storage
2. Use a waste removal company such as Serco to dispose of the waste as it is generated
3. Transport the waste ourselves to a licensed waste site
Pros Cons Cost
1 Cost effective in that the skip would only be emptied when full
Always available
Would take all manner of waste Need a location to site the skip
Unless locked, could encourage dumping by residents
May be unsightly unless screened £110 per skip empty
2 No untidy mess left around
Effectively outsources the problem
Could result in higher costs as a result of small loads £57-£67 half load
£119-£184 full load
3 No untidy mess left around
Would be charged for a load, so a small load is not cost effective £85 per load + £124 license to carry
DPC needs somewhere to store waste. This should be accepted and a site identified. To prevent this site becoming an eyesore, it should be planned for and managed.
I have asked HALC to email other Parish Councils to let me know how they handle waste and I am waiting for replies.
